The Nigerian Stored Product Research Institute (NSPRI) got her admin. building commissioned on Tuesday 7th December, 2021 at her Station in Onireke adjacent to Ibadan North West Local Government Area (LGA) Secretariat, Ibadan. The commissioning had in attendance the Hon. Minister of Agriculture ably represented by the Executive Secretary, Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN), Prof. Garba Hamidu Sharubutu mni, Chairman of Ibadan North West LGA, Alhaji Abdul Rahmon Olanrewaju, Executive Director (ED) of NSPRI, Dr Patricia Pessu, ED CRIN, Dr. Patrick Adebola and other EDs of Agricultural Research Institutes and Provost of Colleges of Agriculture situated in Ibadan metropolis. In his keynote address, the Hon. Minister of Agriculture stated that agriculture is a cardinal program of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration and it’s one of the core legacies that the president is keen to leave behind. He stressed that NSPRI has the national mandate to research into post-harvest food preservation in Nigeria, therefore, there is need to establish offices across the length and breadth of this country given the diverse economic potential of each region. He also pointed out that NSPRI is an institution that combines the desire of all sectors of agricultural development specifically in the area of production loses in terms of diseases and pests, and post-harvest loses in the areas of harvest, transportation and storage. The twin effect of these has a daring consequence on the livelihood of the farmers, the economic wellbeing and their health status as well as the production indices in the country. While adhering to the principle of President Muhammadu Buhari’s agricultural policy of growing what we eat and eating what we grow, the minister is concerned with the likely devastating effect food spoilage can cause to human and the environment, hence, one of his challenging tasks is to ensure safety of human, animal and the environment through effective preservation of agricultural products and provision of quality food. The minister believed that the new structure commissioned will not only provide a conducive working environment, but will serve as an impetus to engage and collaborate more with other stakeholders. This will reflect very positively in the fortunes and well-being of farmers and the overall agricultural value chain, and ultimately by enhancing food security.
